Through the TSP Program, Baylor-Swaziland and Baylor-Malawi are partners in continuing the Systems for Improved Access to Pharmaceuticals and Services (SIAPS) program in Swaziland. The new project, Swaziland Supply Chain and Pharmaceutical Assistance for Sustainable Systems (SC+PASS) seeks to improve the delivery and consistent use of HIV, TB and other reproductive health commodities and essential pharmaceutical services to achieve desired HIV, TB and SRH health outcomes.

Integrating high-quality nutrition care, support, and treatment (NCST) services into service delivery platforms for HIV and tuberculosis (TB) requires providing healthcare workers with guidelines, job aids, and monitoring tools to facilitate effective prevention and treatment of malnutrition. To meet this need, the Food and Nutrition Technical Assistance III Project (FANTA) and partners have updated Malawi’s national NCST guidelines to include the latest international guidance on nutrition.

In accordance with global testing and treatment targets, many countries are seeking ways to reach the “90-90-90” goals, starting with diagnosing 90% of all people with HIV. Quality HIV testing services are needed to enable people with HIV to be diagnosed and linked to treatment as early as possible. It is essential that opportunities to reach people with undiagnosed HIV are not missed, diagnoses are correct and HIV-negative individuals are not inadvertently initiated on life-long treatment.

Background

In September, 2016, South Africa adopted a policy of providing antiretroviral treatment to everyone infected with HIV irrespective of their CD4 cell count. Studies of universal treatment and expanded prevention of HIV differ widely in their projections of effects and the associated costs, so we did this analysis to attempt to find a consensus.

The Southern African HIV Clinicians Society is thrilled to announce that they are entering into a training partnership with WITS RHI. This partnership will see WITS RHI’s highly-regarded Clinical HIV Management Course being handed over to the Society to adapt, modernise and implement.

The aim of this course is to provide doctors with regional HIV treatment knowledge and expertise, by developing clinicians’ abilities to effectively manage HIV complications and provide leadership in HIV prevention, treatment and care.
