The association between HIV infection and pulmonary function in a rural African population

OBJECTIVES: HIV infection has been associated with an impaired lung function in high-income countries, but the association between HIV infection and pulmonary function in Sub-Saharan Africa remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the relation between HIV infection and pulmonary function in a rural African population.

HIV infection is not associated with the initiation of curative treatment in women with cervical cancer in Botswana

Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Sub-Saharan Africa. The risk of developing cancer is increased for women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It is unknown which factors predict the initiation of curative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in resource-limited settings and whether HIV is associated with initiating curative CRT in settings with a high HIV burden.

New Findings Presented at IAS 2017 Reveal More about the Inter-relationship Between the Microbiome and HIV

Over the past several years, research has uncovered just how important the microbiome is to human health. Catapulted by the Human Microbiome Project, researchers have begun to tap into a wealth of scientific knowledge showing us that the microbiome can affect and contribute to maintaining health, as well as impact the course of numerous diseases. Scientific publications on the microbiome have increased by 700% over the past six years. Several presentations at IAS 2017 focused on the microbiome.

BACKGROUND:

Rates of pregnancy and HIV infection are high among adolescents. However, their engagement in prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) services is poorly characterized. We compared engagement in the PMTCT cascade between adult and adolescent mothers in Kenya.

HIV-1 is undetectable in preejaculatory secretions from HIV-1-infected men on suppressive HAART

Politch, Joseph A.; Mayer, Kenneth H.; Anderson, Deborah J.

Preejaculatory fluid, a viscous, lubricating secretion expressed by penile urethral glands during sexual excitement, may play a role in the sexual transmission of HIV-1. The urethra has been shown to be an important site of HIV infection in men and male macaques, and preejaculatory fluid and urethral swabs from HIV-1-infected men often contain HIV. Recent studies have shown that HAART reduces but does not eliminate seminal HIV shedding in infected men, and that the penile urethra remains a site of persistent simian immunodeficiency virus infection in HAART-treated macaques.

Medical male circumcision: How does price affect the risk-profile of take-up

Thornton R, Godlonton S.

OBJECTIVE:

The benefit of male circumcision is greatest among men who are most at risk of HIV infection. Encouraging this population of men to get circumcised maximizes the benefit that can be achieved through the scale-up of circumcision programs. This paper examines how the price of circumcision affects the risk profile of men who receive a voluntary medical circumcision.

Here we show that...B cell follicles constitute 'sanctuaries' for persistent SIV replication in the presence of potent anti-viral CD8+ T cell responses, potentially complicating efforts to cure HIV infection with therapeutic vaccination or T cell immunotherapy.
