2018 Regional Health Data Mapping Workshop

The USAID-funded The Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) Program is searching for potential participants for a Regional Health Data Mapping Workshop. The workshop will be held from August 13-17, 2018 in South Africa. 

The workshop will focus on the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in public health, specifically using maps for better program and policy decision making. This will be a basic workshop that introduces participants to data concepts including management and cleaning of data in Microsoft Excel, using maps as part of the decision making process, introduction to GIS concepts (including GPS data collection), and hands-on introduction to QGIS, an open source GIS software package. No previous experience with GIS software is required.

Eligibility and Requirements

Interested applicants must meet the following criteria: 

  • Must live or work in South Africa, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, or Zimbabwe
  • Must have at least an undergraduate degree in public health, demography, statistics, monitoring & evaluation, or related subject as well as basic training in statistics
  • Must have a valid passport (valid 6 months after workshop)
  • Must be able to understand and communicate in English 
  • Must have a laptop computer that can be used throughout the workshop
  • Must be available to attend every day of the workshop
  • Must be committed to share the lessons learned from the workshop with colleagues after the workshop is completed

Workshop Costs and Participation

The USAID-funded DHS Program will cover hotel, per diem and local transport costs in South Africa for all participants. Airfare and transport to the airport in home country is expected to be covered by the participant or by his/her employer. If your institution is unable to pay for airfare, a limited number of travel fellowships will be available. If you wish to be considered for a travel fellowship, please fill out the travel fellowship portion of the application. Please note that participants who are able to secure funding for airfare will have a higher chance of being accepted to the workshop. Funding for airfare and transport to airport in home country will be required by July 27, 2018.
